Red Rewind: Late winner has City flying
The Minstermen had though to survive the early loss of their inspirational skipper Chris Brass, who suffered a facial injury after an accidental eighth-minute collision. He was replaced in defence by young midfielder Leigh Wood.
But the visitors still went ahead midway through the opening half, with Lee Nogan initially sending on loan Sunderland striker Michael Reddy chasing down the left. His low cross in turn witnessed Peter Duffield laying the ball off for arriving one-time Middlesbrough midfielder Stephen Brackstone to lash into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
And Kidderminster were to receive another major blow just six minutes from the break when their already-cautioned striker Drewe Broughton led with an elbow on Jon Parkin and promptly received his marching orders.
Despite that they were soon back on equal terms, on loan home debutant Andy Bishop racing onto a long ball forward and slipping his finish beyond oncoming goalkeeper Alan Fettis. The York fans behind the same goal weren't particularly impressed as a meat pie was launched towards a player later to become a real City favourite.
Former Northern Ireland international Fettis then produced a fingertip save to deny Bishop his second from a forceful downward header, although the visitors pushed on following the break and earned themselves a number of corners while going close to reclaiming their earlier advantage.
First right-back Darren Edmondson had a close-range effort blocked before home keeper Stuart Brock gathered central defender Parkin's header at the second attempt.
However, their numerically disadvantaged opponents rallied well and Fettis frustrated Dean Bennett from the edge of the area, while Lee Ayres saw a couple of firm headers cleared off the line by both Edmondson and Wood. John Melligan then scuffed directly towards Fettis and Bishop also hooked wide of the mark.
But with just four minutes remaining it was York dramatically clinching a late winner; substitute Tom Cowan's inviting cross being met by Nogan carefully guiding his finish over the exposed keeper as the jubilant travelling fans began their celebrations.
