Red Rewind: A tale of two Cities

Red Rewind: A tale of two Cities
Nineteen years ago today York City memorably overcame fallen giants Manchester City 2-1 in a Nationwide League Two encounter at Bootham Crescent.

There was a sensational ending to a first-ever league meeting between the two clubs, with an unknown teenage debutant the most unlikeliest of festive heroes - and that with his opening touch in first-team action.

Relegation-threatened York had begun with real intent and stunned their illustrious visitors within eighty-four seconds of the kick-off; winger Gordon Connelly driving in from just inside the area following Richard Cresswell's low cross.

But apart from unsuccessful penalty claims when Cresswell appeared to be impeded inside the box, their threat rapidly diminished. That witnessed Craig Russell escaping centre-back Barry Jones and producing a speculative 32nd minute effort that deflected off the outstanding Tony Barras and high into the far corner.

Now with midfield playmaker Ian Bishop increasingly dictating the action alongside the equally impressive Jamie Pollock, the visitors appeared strong favourites to progress towards their expected victory.

However, they had reckoned without York-born home goalkeeper Bobby Mimms, who produced a brilliant double-save to thwart first Pollock and then Gareth Taylor at the start of the second period.

The Minstermen suffered further unfortunate blows with early goalscorer Connelly and striker Neil Tolson both limping out of the action, and it seemed to be a case of simply when their great resistance would finally be broken.

But there was to be an unexpected twist in the tale as the decisive strike incredibly went in the opposite direction with just four minutes remaining.

Local full-back Andrew Dawson had only just replaced injured goalscorer Connelly, and with his first senior touch calmly side-footed fellow substitute Rodney Rowe's subtle reverse pass into the net to claim a famous victory - and spark huge celebrations.
