Red Rewind: 33rd Anniversary of THAT victory

Red Rewind: 33rd Anniversary of THAT victory
Thirty-three years ago today, York City caused one of the greatest-ever FA Cup shocks when knocking out multi-millionaires Arsenal.

Keith Houchen was their goalscoring hero from a 90th minute penalty after being brought down inside the area by Steve Williams.

The Gunners included eight full internationals for the fourth round tie that had required three inches of snow to be cleared away from the playing surface in order to proceed.

But it was massive underdogs York that appeared to adapt better to the difficult conditions, with fearless eighteen-year-old rookie forward Martin Butler leading their charge.

England striker Paul Mariner saw an early header claimed by goalkeeper Mike Astbury before centre-back Tommy Caton went close at a free-kick.

Meanwhile, the irrepressible Butler was blocked off at the opposite end, while York-born Gary Ford also dragged a shot wide.

The atmosphere was simply electric inside the packed stadium, with the vast majority of those present grateful as Astbury denied the international front pairing of Mariner and Tony Woodcock on separate occasions.

Keith Walwyn then muscled through into the opposite area and lobbed over goalkeeper John Lukic, but Caton somehow recovered to scramble the ball off the line.

York were fighting magnificently. Butler lashed over on the end of a superb individual break, although with the clock ticking down a replay was appearing increasingly more likely.

But the Minstermen weren't done yet - and in the final minute Walwyn and Butler contrived to send Houchen chasing inside area, until his progress was interrupted by Williams.

Referee Don Shaw immediately thrust an extended right arm towards the penalty spot, directly in front of the vast, swaying ranks of home supporters.

And Houchen duly picked himself up, somehow defying the unbearable tension to calmly sidefoot inside Lukic's right-had post as the stadium erupted in celebration of a truly momentous victory.
