Red Rewind: Boss Little counted out

Red Rewind: Boss Little counted out
Rewind goes back to March 1999, and the final game in charge for the club's third longest-serving manager producing a 4-2 defeat at Notts County.

On the sixth anniversary of taking over, manager Alan Little's future at York City is hanging by the slenderest of threads following a tenth game without a victory.

Having disastrously collected just a couple of points from an available thirty, City are now only avoiding a League Two relegation place on number of goals scored.

Surprisingly the visitors were to immediately strike this time on the muddy Meadow Lane surface, when home skipper Ian Richardson attempted to head back towards goalkeeper Darren Ward. But he had reckoned without City striker Rodney Rowe also getting his forehead on the ball and looping it into the net after just 96 seconds.

However, York were to dramatically collapse during a calamitous seven-minute period midway through the opening half.

Alex Dyer firstly hoisted a cross that rebounded off visiting centre-back Martin Reed and Richardson instantly flashed an equaliser past Andy Warrington.

Nevertheless, Martin Garratt then had totally justifiable claims for a penalty ignored when weaving beyond Mark Warren and being blatantly chopped down inside the opposite area.

And within minutes Richardson met Fran Tierney's cross and his header crept in off the post despite the best efforts of Warrington.

Sixty seconds later it got even worse for the visitors, County striker Peter Beadle knocking down another Dyer delivery and Tierney lashing home.

With defender Reed having to be replaced as a result of an earlier collision, City tried to work their way back into the contest, with substitute Mark Tinkler now to the forefront.

But there was already increasing dissension on the terraces, a 'Little Out' banner now adding to York fans' vocal protests.

In fairness their fallen heroes were continuing to move the ball around in stylish fashion, but too often without any significant threat.

And when they finally did create an opportunity, goalscorer Rowe could only propel full-back Andy McMillan's inviting cross directly at Ward.

In contrast a misplaced extended pass from Richard Cresswell was intercepted and fed up to bustling forward Beadle, who skipped around the challenge of McMillan and smashed in from around thirty-yards.

At least the visitors had the final word on another difficult afternoon, Cresswell receiving Scott Jordan's pass and drawing a foul from Warren inside the area.

York's newly-capped England Under-21 international striker then clinically despatched his nineteenth goal of the season from the resultant penalty.
