Rewind Extra: Striker leaves hometown club
Tracking back to September 1996 and a talented young goalscorer leaving hometown club York City in search of a new challenge.

Striker Glenn Naylor has joined Darlington on a free transfer having found senior opportunities increasingly restricted at Bootham Crescent.

The 24-year-old already had a loan spell with the Quakers last term, and arrives on a free transfer after selecting them ahead of their third division rivals Northampton Town.

York-born Naylor has been unable to break into the starting-eleven this season due to the emerging partnership of Neil Tolson and Gary Bull, who both scored while helping the Minstermen sensationally knock Everton out of the League Cup earlier this week.

"I think it was vital for him [to move] at this stage of his career," manager Alan Little admitted to The Press. "I am happy to see him fixed up. I rate him highly and he has the potential to play for a long time, but his chances here were limited at the moment and it's better for his career to go and get some games."

Naylor originally signed YTS terms for City in the summer of 1988 having earlier appeared for Heworth (later renamed Cliftonville) in the York Minor League.

Turning professional in February 1990, the youngster immediately scored on his senior debut in a 2-2 home draw with Scunthorpe United the following December.

He went on to claim 32 goals in 129 appearances (87 starts, 42 substitute) for his hometown club.
