Rewind Extra: York call for international rescue

Rewind Extra: York call for international rescue
Rewind Extra ventures back to March 2000 and a big transfer move bringing a highly-rated international goalkeeper to Bootham Crescent.

York City manager Terry Dolan has pulled off a major coup by signing Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Alan Fettis.

The Minstermen chief has been carefully assessing his options following a recent injury to York-born custodian Bobby Mimms.

His seventeen-year-old deputy Russell Howarth is already highly-regarded at the club, and appropriately maintained an impressive clean-sheet during the weekend home draw with Exeter City.

But Fettis, who is out of contract at Blackburn Rovers at the end of the season, has been capped twenty-five times at full international level.

The 29-year-old previously worked under Dolan while going on to make over 150 appearances at Hull City, where he twice scored when playing as a striker having originally joined from Irish club Ards in 1991.

He's since had spells with West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest, while also including a loan stay at Leicester City earlier this season..

"I brought him through at Hull City, so from a point of view of knowing the lad, there is no problem," Dolan told The Press. "He is an international keeper who has suffered from a lack of first-team football over the years because he has been number two at Nottingham Forest and Blackburn. He wants first-team football."

The Belfast-born shot-stopper is set to earn an immediate debut for the weekend visit to Peterborough United.
